What I Wish I Knew: Before I Gave My Wedding Speech
When it comes to public speaking, there are two types of people. There are those who strut up to the mic like they are on RuPaul’s Drag Race, grab that baby, and belt out all their best one-liners. And then some people that cringe a little (or a lot) at the thought and maybe wish that they could pre-record their wedding speech because public speaking is terrifying. Here’s what we’ll 100% promise you – you will be so happy, so full of adrenaline at your wedding, that your speech will be amazing, and you’ll breeze through it. Still! There is plenty of prep work that can be done to make sure your wedding speech is perfection – here are some of our tried and tested tips for success!

Don’t Leave It Until The Last Moment: Writing your wedding speech can be a task you do over the months leading up to your wedding – pick a little book that you can scribble notes and ideas as they come to you, and about eight weeks before your wedding, start to formulate those thoughts into paragraphs that you can weave together into a speech.
Rehearse It In Front of Your Bestie: Once you’ve written your speech, feedback from a trusted and loving source is crucial. Pick the bridesmaids who you know will be amazing at this task, rehearse it in front of her, and ask her to give you some notes on how it sounds. It’s good to get feedback from a small audience before you give your speech in front of a larger one.
Trying to host a wedding without professional help is impossible. Do A Little Vocal Warm Up: This little tip is a take it or leave it, because on your wedding day, you’ll have so much on your mind that you might not even remember. But if you do remember, a little vocal warm up goes a long way! Sing in the shower, sing in the car, sing along with all your favorite love songs, just SING! to get the frogs out of your throat. You can also buzz your lips together to warm them up and roll your tongue a few times. These little warm-ups are a nice distraction when you’re feeling antsy with anticipation.
Speak Slower Than You Think You Need To: When you’re at the podium, holding the microphone, speak slower than you think you need too. It sounds nuts, but your voice will ring out nice and clear if you speak slowly, meaning your elderly guests will be able to hear you clearly and they’ll get every word at the back of the room!

It’s Okay If You Laugh Or Cry Or Both: Preferably both – your wedding speech was meant to bring out the best emotions in you. Gratitude, love, hope – all the best parts of your past and future have come together in one room, so if you feel yourself getting emotional, let it out!
